Youth United
![]() Our Youth United Program had a great first year 2007-2008. This program is designed to get students involved in planning, fundraising and building half a Habitat house in 2008! Our incoming co-chairs Alex Lazo and Spenser Robert will lead the 2008-2009 committee after a year of great leadership from Alyssa Broughton. This is an exciting opportunity for youth to volunteer on our committee made up of middle and high school students from local school districts as well as adult advisors such as teachers, youth group leaders and parents. Youth aged 5-25 can participate in all aspects of the program and we look forward to having your favorite student get involved!
Drawing Competition Our committee members directed a drawing competition among students in the Cave Creek Unified school district. The winners were chosen and are featured on greeting cards that are available for sale at Habitat. Cans for Habitat Younger children are encouraged to place can collection boxes and outreach material (available in our office) at their schools. The money raised from the collection of soda cans goes straight to Youth United’s efforts to build a house! Abitibi Paper Recycling At our construction site (5815 E. Blue Ridge Drive, Cave Creek), Abitibi Consolidated has placed a recycling bin for newspaper that is emptied monthly and the proceeds go straight into Youth United’s efforts to build a house! Students of all ages are encouraged to drop off their families’ old newspapers and cardboard here. Cell phone recycling Doni Nasr, a teacher at Cactus Shadows High School is collecting old cell phones to keep them out of the land fill. She transports them to a local company that recycles them. Students are encouraged to drop their old phones in room E29 at the school: 5802 E. Dove Valley Road. Lenten calendars
In January, members of the Youth United Committee visited local churches to speak to their youth groups and classes about participating in our Lenten calendar fundraiser. Throughout Lent 2008, children were encouraged to follow a calendar provided by Habitat and count their blessings every day by counting how many luxuries they have in their homes. For each blessing they have (window, fridge, backyard etc.) they deposited a coin into the house bank (provided by Habitat). At the end of Lent, our committee members collected the house banks and all of the proceeds went toward building a house for Habitat. |
